Christmas Concert 2022
Summer Concert 2022
On a very hot evening in May, we played to a packed house. Both audience and choir enjoyed the live performance of old favourites and new arrangements.
Concert at St Giles - Wednesday 24 November 8pm
Southside Choir are delighted that our first performance in almost two years will be a return to St Giles’ Cathedral!
Featuring some choir favourites like ‘Afton Water’ and ‘Music Lead the Way’ the programme will also include new repertoire both traditional and contemporary. The songs should raise a smile and possibly draw an occasional tear. Above all, we celebrate the joy of singing together again. Donations on the night will be for the Refugee Welcoming Project at St Giles, which supports refugees and migrants who come to Edinburgh to become New Scots. |
Make Music Day UK 21 June 2021 #makemusicdayuk
To mark "Make Music Day UK 2021", we are premiering our latest video performance on YouTube at 5pm today. "Comfort Me with Apples" is a beautiful arrangement by Gail Lund and adapted from the Songs of Solomon. Thanks to all who took part and to Seonaid and Douglas for directing/editing and accompaniment. Spring songs and videos - we promised you more and here they are!
Since Christmas, we have been continuing to sing together online, recording our own choir parts and sending them to our choir leader, Seonaid Lynn. She has done a brilliant job of editing these and creating some new videos which you can also find on our YouTube channel.
With a Scottish theme, the songs are Afton Water - arr. Alexander L'Estrange and Red is the Rose - arr. Mark Sirett

Edinburgh Southside Community Choir bring 5 days of choral cheer to brighten the December darkness
We have been busy! Since September, our choir leader Seonaid Lynn has been leading the Virtual Choir on a journey which has culminated in us creating our own YouTube channel.
You can find the Choir YouTube channel here, please subscribe! www.youtube.com/channel/UCN6yCVR290oqbStli_vvnFQ Between 1st and 5th December, we shared the five songs we had been working on throughout the autumn. A song was uploaded at 6pm on each of the five days. Thanks to the efforts of all the choir and the significant technological perseverance of Seonaid and Donald Thomson our accompanist. We hope that you enjoy hearing the songs and seeing the videos!

Virtual voices!
Despite the restrictions of 2020 lockdown, we were determined to carry on singing in some way.
The opportunities that technology gives us and the tenacity of our choir leader Seonaid in mastering the editing means that we are very proud to share a video below of our first virtual performance. We look forward to doing more!

Christmas performances 2019

We sang at the Christmas Craft Fair at the Eric Liddell Centre to add some festive cheer to the morning. Friday 6 December was our Christmas Concert 2019 Held at the Edinburgh Methodist Church this year, we had a great festive evening. Thanks to everyone for coming and to our generous audience who raised £380 for Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland. Here is a thank you from Shona Langlands, Community Fundraising Manager: "Thank you so much for forwarding your generous donation. Summer Concert 2019
We had a really full house and a very appreciative audience on Wednesday 15th May at 8pm at St Giles Cathedral on the Royal Mile.
The Choir performed a varied repertoire from Scotland to Japan and show tunes to gospel. We were joined by soprano soloist Mhairi Gibson whose beautiful soprano voice rang out across the cathedral. We invited donations to support the work of the St Giles Neighbourhood Group and I am delighted to report that final amount, including Gift Aid, was £1069.97. There were a number of American visitors in the audience who really enjoyed the concert, one donating $100! Feedback included "splendid concert", "your best ever" and "loved the jazzy ones". Many thanks to friends and family too for continuing support. |
Christmas Concert 2018 - December 5th
This year we sang a variety of songs old and new at the Edinburgh Methodist Church, 25 Nicolson Square, Edinburgh. It was a lovely venue to sing in and we had a packed and very appreciative audience. We remembered all the reindeer names, really we did....!
Our soloist soprano Mhairi Gibson was unwell so could not perform but our Musical Director Seonaid and our accompanist Donald (and his lovely mum!) saved the day with some wonderful songs and duets. Seonaid's performance of the travellers' song was particularly poignant. |
Summer Concert 2018
Guest appearance with The Good News Gospel Choir
The Good News Gospel Choir, based in Annecy in south-east France and formed around 15 years ago made a flying visit to Edinburgh and the Epworth Hall, Nicolson Square on Sunday, May 6th at 7.30pm, where the Southside Community Choir performed a supporting slot.
We were impressed by their dynamic style! You can find out more about the Good News Choir on their website at https://goodnewsgospel.jimdo.com and a bit more about their visit below. |
More on our collaboration with The Good News Gospel Choir
Bienvenue a Edimbourg
On the weekend of the 4th– 7th May 2018 Southside Community Centre welcomed the Good News Gospel Choir based in Annecy, SE France, to Edinburgh. https://goodnewsgospel.jimdo.com/
Choir members were delighted to offer hospitality to our French guests and a day long programme of sightseeing, including whisky tasting, was arranged culminating in an evening ceilidh at the Ghillie Dhu. This proved to be a great success and our thanks go to Alan, one of our tenors, for organising the day. All of our French guests who took part were enthusiastic about experiencing this taste of Scottish culture.
On Saturday 6th we all met to perform in the City Methodist Church in Nicolson Square. The Good News Choir performed a number of songs, both spiritual and African with energy and vigour. We were very impressed by their leader whose enthusiasm was infectious. However, we’re not sure whether her role as the ‘barefoot choir leader’ will ever be emulated by Seonaid...
The Southside Choir also sang a few pieces from our extensive repertoire and together we sang ‘Going Up a Yonder’ and ‘Amazing Grace’. The evening ended with both choirs singing one of the African songs as we led the audience out of the building.
We have been invited to make a return visit to Annecy in the near future, so watch this space.

Summer Concert 2017 |
We were delighted to welcome Pete Clark as our special guest. One of Scotland's top fiddlers, Pete lives in Perthshire not far from the birthplace of Niel Gow and the beautiful Perthshire landscape has been the inspiration for many of his compositions. Some of these can be heard on his most recent album "Now & Then" alongside a few gems from those of the great Scottish fiddle composers Niel Gow, William Marshall and James Scot Skinner.
In addition to his highly successful solo career, Pete has played with a great diversity of artists. Much of his regular playing is for ceilidh dancing and on occasion, he also plays for the RSCDS (Royal Scottish Country Dance Society). Pete was, until recently, an instructor at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and he continues to teach and share his love and knowledge of Scottish fiddle music. |
St Giles Spring Concert March 2017
With a look back to the 60s, reflections on the changing seasons, and some thoughts on the varied nature of love. The concert included some choir favourites such as ''Something Told the Wild Geese' and 'Through the Eyes of a Child.' We sang a selection of songs as diverse as Latin rhythms, Latin verse, 60s pop medley, Scottish and American folksong and took a left at Tuxedo Junction! Our soloist Mhairi Gibson and pianist Donald Thomson added their usual professional flair.

Christmas Concert December, 2016
We sang some Christmas classics and some less-familiar but beautiful winter and yuletide songs. There was a flavour of gospel, a hint of snow and a large dollop of figgy pudding! This year we were joined again by our great guest soloist Mhairi Gibson and had a lovely couple of piano duets from Donald Thomson and his mum.
We had a great reception from a warm and appreciative audience who seemed to enjoy our explosive finale!
We also raised funds for Crisis at Christmas through a generous audience collection

St Giles Concert 2016

We performed as part of the St Giles at Six programme as we have done in previous years. A full and appreciative audience listened to our performance which included a diverse range of songs such as "Wayfaring Stranger","Lux Aeterna" and "Over the Rainbow" We all enjoyed the beautiful solos from our guest soloist Mhairi Gibson.
Our rousing finale of "Music Lead the Way" went down especially well. The Japanese gentleman and his son sitting near the front seemed to enjoy our rendition of the Japanese song "In This Painted House" although they could have been smiling at our attempts at Japanese..... Performing in St Giles is always a treat and positive feedback from guests - and the "boss" (!) our Musical Director Seonaid Lynn - made this a really good evening. Thanks to Donald our piano accompanist and to Roddy for rocking those bells and tambourine! Nice comments so far include:

Christmas 2015
Despite the fierce weather, we had a great turnout and a very successful concert. Many thanks to our enthusiastic audience who sung along with gusto and dug deep to donate to Mercy Corps, our chosen local charity. This year our concert guests were Arlen with Graham Cumberland on guitar and Sadie Maskery on vocals. They performed some of the great classic tunes from the 1920s to the present day. Thanks, as always, to Seonaid our Musical Director and Donald Thomson for his first Christmas as our piano accompanist.

Summer Concert June 2015
Another sizzling performance from the choir had our appreciative audience entertained. Our youngest ever audience member - 7days - slept throughout (lulled by our dulcet tones no doubt!) and only cried once we had finished... we do like to leave our audiences wanting more!
Great feedback: "It was a superb concert, great sound and a fantastic choice of repertoire". |

St Giles November Concert 2014
We performed at St Giles as part of the St Giles at Six concert series.on Sunday 30th November at 6pm. We had a packed cathedral and got a brilliant response to the preview of our Christmas programme. We've had some great feedback over the years but this year we had a very special letter sent to us by one audience member - here's some of what she said:
"What a fantastic way to start Advent! This concert surpassed previous ones - the venue was amazing, the professionalism of the choir surely made everyone think you were all professionals and the songs chosen were lovely. Actually, 'lovely' doesn't do justice to the performance, each and every song you sang was of the highest quality, your diction, decorum and whole demeanour was so professional. You are a superb choir who well deserves large audience attendance at all your concerts and we always look forward to them. Please pass on to everyone involved a huge thank-you from us for giving us and all who attended a wonderful Sunday evening."

The Big Big Sing
The Big Big Sing is part of the Commonwealth Games cultural programme and is being held at venues across the UK.
And it was a Big Big Sing at the Usher Hall on 16 February, when over 300 people, including Southside Choir members, had a great afternoon of singing, swaying, purple T shirts and even some dancing. We learned four new songs, from Trinidad, Kenya, South Africa and Samoa, singing them in their original language. Quite a challenge, especially with the Samoan La'u Lupe.
The workshop was led by Stephen Deazley, who started the Love Music Community Choir in Edinburgh last year, and Eugene Skeef from South Africa. They had an infectious energy and were accompanied by a great band and by the technicians who made sure the words and music were up on the big screen along with the video of the singers in full flow.
It is difficult to capture the atmosphere in words, but by the end of the afternoon there was tremendous feeling of community, happiness and achievement. We'd come in as 300+ individuals, and left as a choir. And this is only the beginning. A Big, Big, BIG Sing for 10,000 singers is planned for Glasgow on 27 July, during the Commonwealth Games. If you want to join in you can register at http://www.bigbigsing.org/whatson/big-big-sing-glasgow/

I have attended various concerts over the last couple of years, and, as a friend said when I spoke to her at last week's concert,"These concerts just get better and better every time".
- There is always so much variety of content which is superbly delivered and there are usually songs for audience participation.
- The inclusion of the junior choir to the concert adds to the evening as they are so well disciplined & really engage the audience with their beautiful singing.
- Seonaid's choice of music and her dedication to both choirs produces a thoroughly enjoyable evening.
- Loved the gospel song
- Had to stop your Dad getting up and joining the men on the "like-I-doo-doo-doo's"!
- "Thank you for the music" was my favourite.
Song and Dance Evening: Friday 5 April 2013
Southside Community Choir hosted an informal evening of song and dance. featuring the Palmyra-Macedon Select High School Choir from Nat the end of their British tour. We enjoyed a short programme of high quality choral singing then members of both choirs and families/supporters joined together for some ceilidh dancing to round off the evening!
Some great feedback from the Palmyra-Macedon High School Choir, posted on their blog!

"Last night’s exchange concert was fantastic. The host Choir provided us with lovely refreshments, including homemade shortbread, and then taught us some Scottish dances complete with accordion accompaniment. Would you believe that EVERY STUDENT danced, both with Pal-Mac partners and adults from the community Choir. Most said that it was their favourite evening yet. I thoroughly enjoyed watching some of our students step out of their comfort zones willingly and give it a whirl (literally!). A ridiculously good time was had by all! Parents, I think that many of you would have been in pleasant disbelief !"
